Michel Bélair
Gitarrenbauer aus Montreal
Michel Bélair (born 1965) is a Canadian classical-guitar luthier based in Montreal, recognized for crafting high-end concert guitars that combine traditional European design influences with modern acoustic research and craftsmanship.
Originally trained as a classical guitarist, Bélair developed an interest in music in his early teens and went on to study guitar performance at McGill University, earning both bachelor’s and master’s degrees under renowned guitarist Alvaro Pierri. He later studied in Paris with Roberto Aussel and achieved recognition as a performer, winning prizes in international classical-guitar competitions. His experience as a professional guitarist strongly informs his work as a luthier, giving him insight into the needs and perspectives of performers.
Bélair began building guitars after years of playing instruments by celebrated French luthier Daniel Friederich, whose work deeply influenced him. He studied guitar making with Canadian luthier Jean Rompré and received guidance from Friederich himself. Drawing on these influences, Bélair developed his own approach that blends meticulous craftsmanship with acoustic analysis and material study to achieve tonal balance and projection.
